Dan's Recovery - THANK YOU!!!
Date: Wed, 4 May 2005
Dear St. Francis Parish,
Thank you. Dan is doing quite well! Our prayers have been answered in
many ways so far, and also through blessings we never expected.
Despite a bad bout of shingles, Dan continues to grow stronger each
day.
The doctors think they may release him to come home around May 21st!
This would be a huge relief! The separation from our son and home has been
extremely difficult. At last, there is light at the end of the tunnel!
Unfortunately/Fortunately, through the entire recovery time, our situation
never necessitated the need for outside daytime volunteers. Most
of our challenges have been overnights, and friends from West Michigan
have been most eager to help us.
Yes, we did get several individuals from St. Francis offering to sit
with Dan a few hours a day. And I have their phone numbers always
available just in case. I hope to email them a big "thank you" for
being
willing and able to help us out. But like I said, it turned out that
we
could manage things differently. We just didn't know what to expect
from
all this, and the one thing I was told to do was, "Be prepared!" Your
parishioners were a major source of comfort knowing they were there
for
us. Thank you for being open to our request. God Bless
you and your work,
Below here is the publicty that we used to find help:
Several daytime volunteers are needed to sit with Dan during his recovery.
Volunteers commit to a few hours on one or two weekdays for 6 weeks
(from mid-April through late May).
Dan, (a young husband & father) who is from the West side of Michigan,
has leukemia and will under go a bone marrow transplant. During his
six-week recovery in Ann Arbor, he will be up and around, doing all his
own personal care. He will probably nap a good portion of the day,
and perhaps chat a little, and maybe watch a video with the volunteer caregiver.
Dan is one of the nicest guys in the world, and is well loved by many.
You, the volunteer caregiver, would need to assist with making lunch,
make sure he takes his medicine, and watch for symptoms of a problem.
There would be a notebook with what to look for. Dan's wife (primary
caregiver) would be very reachable (working just a 5 minute drive from
the apartment) if the caregiver was concerned about something.
