"The person described in this announcement is real. However,
sometimes there is a client with a greater need and vehicles are always
given to the person with the greatest need."
"The person described in this announcement is real. If more than one
vehicle is donated for this person, or another more critical need occurs,
your donation may be granted to another of the many in need on the waiting
list." |

Parish
helps Friends In Deed Respond to Need for Reliable Transportation
On
August 4, 2007, St. Francis Parish helped Friends in Deed (FID) offer a
Car Care Clinic by hosting the class in the St. Francis parking lot. The
goal of the class was to help save money in costly repairs by teaching
preventive maintenance and tips on
how to spot trouble before it becomes a major problem.
Attendees learned car care basics, gained familiarity with their car’s
engine compartment and dashboard lights, and got tips on monitoring fluids
and tires and selecting service persons and facilities.
Our parish
St. Vincent de Paul Society works together with Friends In Deed to get
donations of cars in good condition. Currently 15 households are waiting
for a donated vehicle. In 2006, 87 requests for transportation-related
needs were processed. During the first six months of 2007, 63 requests
were processed by FID. Financial hardship means growing numbers of requests
for help in getting and maintaining vehicles. Requests include car repair,
fuel, car insurance or payment, and car donation.
Many in poverty cite the lack of reliable transportation
as the foremost barrier to finding or keeping a job.

Car Donation Needed! (Jan-Feb 2008)
The St. Francis Parish St. Vincent De Paul chapter seeks the donation
of at least four vehicles each year to be given to a person in need that
resides in Washtenaw County. This is an opportunity to make
a very real difference and improve the quality of life for one of God's
children. And, it is a tax-deductible donation.
And, since your car is not sold, you can claim the full blue book value
for your deduction unlike some other charities.
Please consider this person's need: Our candidate needs
a car for medical appointments. She currently is fighting cancer
and due to her weakened immune system cannot take a bus.
Her only transportation is expensive and unreliable which will make
it difficult to deal with her cancer. She needs a donated car in
reasonable condition to both get to the doctor and for grocery shopping.
Please contact: Allen Sherzer (623-7750) of our parish
St. Vincent DePaul or Scott Wright at the parish office
(821-2121).

Also, We have a 11th grade student at a local high school who needs
a car to get to school and work. The student has recently became
homeless due to abuse in the household. The student is staying with
a friends family so that the student can continue to attend school.
The student currently works a part time job for which at the same job the
student had worked full time over the summer to save money to purchase
a car. The money that was saved for the car has since been taken
out of the account by the parent. The school reports that the student
is a serious student and is maintaining a focus of going to college after
high-school to become a dental hygienist. The student has given up
extra curricular activities in order to work more hours at the job.

Vehicle Donation Needed! (Spring
2007)
Vehicle Donation Needed: The St. Francis Parish St. Vincent De
Paul chapter seeks the donation of at least four vehicles each year to
be given to a person in need that resides in Washtenaw County.
This is an opportunity to make very real difference and improve the quality
of life for one of God's children. And, it is a tax-deductible donation.
Please consider this person’s need:
34-year-old single mother of three, referred to us by Friends In Deed.
Her children are ages 14, 13, & 7. Her 13-year-old son
is mentally handicapped (and is rated developmentally at the level of a
five-year-old). He requires multiple medications.
She is not employed, nor has she been for some time. Her monthly
income is a little over $1,100 between FIA, Bridge Card, and a Social Security
benefit for her son. Her son's medical expenses are covered by Mediacaid.
She is still close with her parents, who live nearby, and they help with
expenses and errands.
The vehicle would ease the transportation crunch she experiences in
getting her kids to school and various activities, as well as help her
meet medical appointments for her son. She is currently getting
by on a very rough looking sedan. She has a current insurance
policy on the sedan. She is getting by well now, but she is
juggling enough responsibilities in her life that reliable transportation
could only help.
Contact: Allen Sherzer (623-7750) or Scott
Wright of the St. Francis Social Ministry (821-2121).

Car Donation Needed! (June 2004)
The parish St. Vincent De Paul chapter is seeking the donation of a
car for a single mother who needs it to get a better job. She has
a 95% loss of hearing and wears two hearing aids. Although she had
a good job with benefits, she was forced to quit and take a low paying
part time job she can walk to when her car broke down and she couldn't
afford to fix it. She has a good work record and will be able to
get back on her feet quickly when she can secure reliable transportation.
The loss of her car also forced her to put a hold on her continuing
education. She is close to completing her associates degree at WCC
and a car will make it possible for her to finish in a semester or two.
This is an opportunity to make very real difference and improve the
quality of life for one of God's children. If you are interested
in making the tax deductible donation of a car, please contact Allen Sherzer

Car Donation Needed for a Family! (October
2002)
Today (Oct 27, 2002) a parishioner donated a 1994 Mercury Villager
mini-van. This sounds like a good fit for the family, so, pending
mechanical inspection, we have a match.
Now (November 5, 2002) the vehicle donated for the family was picked
up by SVDP Detroit and has passed the mechanical inspection.
The next step is for the family to obtain an insurance policy on the
vehicle. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), required for insurance
purposes.
Once they have insurance, the family presents proof of insurance and
a valid driver license when picking up the vehicle at Motors Auction Group
(Monday-Friday 8:30-5). Motors Auction Group is on Telegraph just
south of Sibley.
For a vehicle transfer (picking up) a SVDP member is not required to
be present. |
Our parish St. Vincent DePaul Society is in search of a car donation
for a family. The parents have four children. They need
a vehicle to transport themselves to work and their children to school.
They receive very little assistance from social services. The mother
is a reformed drug addict who attends college at night and works during
the day. She will receive her degree in the Spring. We had
the opportunity to meet the mother and were very impressed with her willingness
and effort to improve the quality of life for her family.
Donate your car today! You will receive a tax deduction while
helping the needy poor with transportation.
If you have a vehicle that could help this family and you'd be willing
to donate it, please contact Chris Kempton. |
Car Donation Needed! (Spring 2002)
Our St. Francis Parish, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, is currently
working with this candidate for a car donation:
Candidate is a 42 year old single man, no children, with degenerative
nerve condition. He hasn't worked for at least two years following
the onset of his condition. His father is dead, but his mother is
still alive and lives in Canton with the man's brother. She is 81
and can no longer drive.
Needs transportation for doctor visits and to spend time with his mother.
He does use a wheelchair, so the more cargo space he has, the better.
His current car has a manual transmission, which he can't drive in his
condition. He is willing to donate his car if a more suitable donation
arrives.
You will receive a tax deduction while helping the poor with transportation.
If you have a vehicle and you'd be willing to donate it, please contact
Chris Kempton. |
