Better Health …

As one reads through all the information on heart disease, heart attacks, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer and diabetes there is one common thread that touches each one of these diseases--they can be prevented, or at least the risk for development can be decreased.

Since heart disease and cancer are the two leading causes of death in our country, we need to take a very active role in caring for the bodies God has given us and reduce our risks.  This is especially important if you have a health risk that cannot be controlled, i.e., heredity, gender, and age.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

·DON'T SMOKE-Cigarettes are the world's NUMBER 1 preventable cause of serious illness such as heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and emphysema.
If you do smoke, get help to quit.  Remember that even passive smoking (inhaling smoke from someone who is smoking) can cause disease!

·EAT HEALTHY FOODS-Reduce the amount of fat in your diet. Foods high in saturated fats and cholesterol contribute to atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries due to plaques), which is a primary cause of heart attack and stroke.
Choose most of the foods you eat from plant sources-fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, beans, legumes, etc.
Decrease or stop eating at fast food restaurants.

·ACHIEVE AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT-Obesity is a major risk factor for development of diabetes. It contributes to the development of heart disease and stroke.

·BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE-Getting 30-60 minutes of exercise 3-4 days each week builds endurance, helps lower blood pressure, raises HDL ("good") cholesterol levels, aids in weight control and reduces your risk of developing diabetes.
Start slowly and build up the amount of time you spend exercising and the type of exercises you like, so you can develop a habit you will enjoy.

·AVOID EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL-If you don't drink, don't start.  Limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol can increase blood pressure and lead to liver and kidney problems.

·KNOW YOUR BLOOD
PRESSURE-  If it's high (140/90 or above) speak with your physician (or other provider) about treatment with medication and/or changes in diet and lifestyle.
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a major risk factor for stroke.

Start today to protect your health and reduce your risk of chronic diseases. It's not only good for you; it's good for the family and friends you influence. You are a role model.
