Community Action Network (CAN) (both Hikone &
Green Baxter Court)
(Announcement Posting Date: Jan
2008)
Would you be willing to help collect slippers? Slippers
are for our kids to wear at our community centers in the winter to help
keep the floors clean. We are hoping to collect about 5 pairs of
soft styles of slippers of each size XS-L for our children 5-12 and 5 pairs
of rubber or croc-style sandals of each size M-XL for our teens.
People can drop off the slippers at the Hikone Community Center (2724 Hikone
Drive, Ann Arbor, 48108). The only concern
that I have would be if someone were to drop the slippers off on a day
or a time we were closed because of the possibility of theft. Would
it be at all possible to collect them at the parish office and I could
pick them up maybe twice a week or whatever. That
way the church members wouldn't have to come to Hikone individually.
I would also be more than happy to pick them up after sunday service or
anything like that. Let me know what you think.

your neighbors in need, please consider one of the volunteer opportunities

groups!

H.E.R.O. (Homeless Empowerment Relationship Organization)
(Announcement Posting Date: Jan
2, 2008)
Help HERO with the baskets and goodies to be sold and raffled off on
auction day. Put your own personal basket together.
Each basket should be made up of the same kinds of "goodies" that people
give up during the holy days. For example, one might be a basket
of chocolate treats, another might be salty goods, another
might be cakes and candies, you get the drift. Yes, if someone
is giving up cigarettes, there could even be a basket filled with tobacco
items and accessories like a lighter, ashtray, etc.
"Sacrifice is -- the surrending of something of lesser value for something
of much greater value." The proceeds of the event will go
to providing goods and services to clients who are homeless or at-risk
of homelessness. The due dates...?
HERO (Homeless Empowerment Relationship Organization) is located at
3810 Packard Road in Suite 240.

Michigan Abilities Center - MAC
(Announcement Posting Date: Jan
2008)
MAC is a non-profit therapeutic riding program
that is located approximately 15 minutes SW of St. Francis and there are
a wide range of indoor and outdoor service projects that are available
for all age groups. Individuals or groups can assist on a one-time
basis or on an ongoing basis and there are ways that they can assist onsite
or offsite. An important component of MAC's mission is to promote
wholesome youth activities, so we are willing to combine service projects
with a social event (e.g. a campfire or outdoor Mass for a youth group.
scouts, or other parish groups). If you would like us to define a
specific service project &/or service dates, please let me know.
Examples of potential one-time activities include:
Facility improvements: painting,
clearing trails, fencing, gardening & landscaping, and building projects
(e.g. mounting ramp & stair rails, insulation, pavers);
Animal-related activities: cleaning
barns, stalls, mucking pastures, assist will set up of shelter & fencing
for small farm animals ;
Office & clerical activities:
typing & data entry, internet searches, website improvements, marketing,
fundraising;
Special events: assisting
with special events (e.g. inclusive 4-H group, camp sessions, scavenger
hunts, & MAC's annual Haunted Barn & Halloween Party);
Ongoing activities include: assisting with
lessons as a sidewalker or horse handler, assisting with animal care (e.g.
grooming, execising, &/or feeding), peer mentors for inclusive 4-H
& camp activities, fundraising, and office/clerical activities.
NOTE: It would be very helpful if parishioners
could assist MAC with raising funds for the Walk & Roll fundraising
event that will be held at EMU March 15, 2008.
Funds are collected in advance and can be turned in as a group (i.e. you
do not need to attend the event in order to collect pledges). The
AA Center for Independent Living sponsors this event and any funds that
are raised on behalf of MAC are split with the AACIL, so efforts benefit
both groups. It is also a great way to increase disability awareness,
and there are prizes, music, refreshments & and a disability expo at
the event. I can forward more information to you regarding this event
if it is of interest.

We would love to have a group of students come in to

young. I could come with some exact questions for discussion such
as "How did you get to school and things like that." or the students could
come up with their own questions. Most of our residents are over

We could do it during school hours or on a Saturday afternoon. Contact:
