St. Vincent de Paul

Elizabeth, a WCC student is the most recent recipient of a car from
the St. Francis St. Vincent DePaul society.  Because of this program,
and the generosity of parishioners who donate cars, she will be able
to find employment and continue her studies.  Her plans are to get a
degree in social work at EMU and return to Kenya to do microfinance.
The St. Vincent DePaul car program encourages donations of cars and
finds working poor to receive them.

"You are wonderful people; just working tirelessly to uplift those in distress.  God bless you all."
Elizabeth,  2009-01

Vehicle/
Car Donations

Our Parish Car Donation Program:
Your Assistance is Needed!   Volunteer to help!
Our Parish, through the good work of our Parish, Society of St. Vincent de Paul  (SVdP) members, currently gives away 4-5 donated vehicles each year to persons that qualify & reside here in Washtenaw County.  Friends In Deed, our congregational social service network, provides names of candidates waiting for a vehicle for employment and/or medical reasons.

The SVdP members provide a team of at least two volunteers to make a home visit and interview identified candidates. Volunteers will further assess the candidate's need for a vehicle and possibly identify barriers to ownership, such as health or financial issues.

Through announcements in the St. Francis Parish weekly bulletin FORUM we locate vehicles for those most in need.   Volunteers who assist with connecting a candidate with a vehicle have the joy of knowing they made a difference in helping someone become self-sufficient.   They bear the gifts from our community, & they hear the personal "thanks" from the recipient.

Persons that Donate a Vehicle contact Friends In Deed at 734-485-7658.   Vehicles will be assessed by a licensed mechanic
(Select Auto, Phone:734-677-1210;  Address: 2231 Platt Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48104)

Any vehicle that is NOT in good enough condition to pass the mechanical inspection, can be donated instead to an organization which accepts vehicles in any condition.  Like:

Persons that Seek a Vehicle, and reside in Washtenaw County, first contact our congregational social service network, at Friends In Deed  (734-484-4357) (Answered  930 AM - 12 Noon).  This network keeps a list of qualified persons that are currently waiting for a vehicle.  St. Francis is one of several car donation programs in Washtenaw County that assist in giving cars away.  This network is very important for identifying persons that are most in need.

People receiving donated cars from Friends In Deed must be low income residents of Washtenaw County for whom a car is a necessity for work, school or a medical condition. We usually use 200% of the Federal Poverty Level as an income guideline but also consider household expenses. Ownership of a car must be affordable and  clients must have a valid driver's license. We do an assessment and verification, including documentation, to determine if they meet our criteria to receive a vehicle. All clients referred to St. Vincent DePaul by FID must also meet this criteria.
